Scope and Contents

This collection consists of the agendas, minutes, forms, and resolutions passed by the Executive Council. Many of the early binders include pictures of the board members, as well as news clippings of various events.

Administrative History:

Student body officers were first created in 1904, six years after the school was started. The first mention of an executive board of the student body government was made in the 1913 Acorn yearbook. This board was initially called the Student Body Council. It was later called the Board of Control and was composed of the president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer of the student body, the presidents of the classes, the debating manager, the athletic manager, editor of the Acorn, and five faculty members. The faculty were represented by the principal of the school; chairmen of amusements, debating, athletics, and the Normal Class advisor. The Board of Control’s duties included upholding and putting into operation the various provisions of the constitution, managing student body funds, and serving as the legislative body of the school. The Board members evolved until the group consisted of the student body officers, Associated Women Students (AWS) and Associated Men Students (AMS) presidents, class presidents, class representatives, Dean of Faculty, Dean of Students, a faculty advisor, as well as other appointed members. The student government was changed in the 1962-1963 school year when Weber State became a four year college. With this change the executive board was renamed the Executive Council. The Council consisted of the student body officers, AWS and AMS presidents, a legal adviser, the Dean of Students, a faculty adviser, and additional appointed members. Their purpose became to oversee all student functions; this entailed approving budgets and giving extra money to different clubs and departments, as well as appointing student government members to different boards and committees in student government and school administration. In 1972 AMS was discontinued as an organization, and AWS was discontinued in 1983, with both leaving the Executive Council in 1972. For a brief time, the Executive Council was renamed the Executive Cabinet before going back to the Executive Council. From that point on the Executive Council was made up of the Student Association officers and a faculty adviser.
