Arrangement of Materials:

The collection has been arranged into sixteen series by topic. Each series is arranged alphabetically or chronologically as appropriate. Most folder titles were kept as labeled by Thompson’s office staff, but not all contents were verified. Of particular importance are the Office Files and Correspondence series, which detail most of the regular operations of Thompson’s office. Scope and Contents

The collection consists of office files from President Thompson's tenure at Weber State University.


Administrative History:

Paul Harold Thompson was born in Ogden, Utah, on November 28, 1938, the son of Harold and Elda Thompson. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Utah in 1964, with a Bachelor of Science in Economics. He received both his Master’s (1966) and Doctoral (1969) degrees in Business Administration from Harvard Graduate School of Business.

After graduating he taught at Harvard until 1973, when he became an associate professor of Organizational Behavior at Brigham Young University. He remained in this department until 1978, serving as department chair from 1974-1978. Thompson also served as Assistant Dean of the School of Management from 1978-1981, and later became Dean of the Marriott School of Management (1984-1989).

Thomson was named Vice-President of Development and University Relations at Brigham Young University in 1989, but in1990 he was inaugurated as the President of Weber State College. During his tenure as president, the school’s status was changed to a university (1991).

He married Carolyn Lee Nelson on March 9, 1961, and they have six children: Loralyn, Kristyn, Shannyn, Robbyn, Daylyn, and Nathan. They are also the grandparents of twenty-four grandchildren.

After serving as Weber’s president for twelve years, he was called as the president of the Massachusetts Boston Mission for the LDS Church. Thompson has also worked as a consultant for companies such as Goodyear and General Electric, and has served on a number of community organization boards. He co-authored two books: Organization and People: Readings, Cases, and Exercises in Organizational Behavior and Novations: Strategies for Career Management. He currently lives in Orem, Utah.
