The recent state legislature allocated a figure ranging from nine to 11 percent, depending on whom you ask granted for pay increments for higher education salary increases. Dr. Donald McCormick, WSC anthropology teacher, said, "Originally, even last month, faculty members were told they would receive at least an 11 percent increase from the state legislators. During the executive council meeting Jan. 22, student government decided they would ask the Dee Events Center to not sell student tickets to the public in future games, even in the event of public pressure. Policy Considered Also considered was the policy of whether or not to ask students to pick up their tickets in advance.Students on campus received the idea they had to pick up tickets at least one day in advance, with an I.D. card, or not be able to attend the game. According to the ticket office, this thinking is not true and that since the request was made by student government, no student tickets have been sold to the public without expressed approval by ASWSC. Unfortunately, the so-called merit pay would have to come out of this inadequate figure, and therein lies the gist of the conflict, he said. Holds Meeting The social science faculty held a meeting to discuss this eventuality, and the consensus was that merit pay should not be recognized until the cost or living is upgraded he added. "After college administration members were apprised of the meeting, they recommended a 10.5 percent across the board increase, deleting the remaining one-half of a percent to accommodate salary promotions," he stated. seatina Attendance Increases The source said that since the first of the year, student attendance has shown a marked increase from crowds of less than 500 students to over 1,000 culminating in a group of over 1,673 students in the Idaho state game and 292 additional guest tickets. Bryan Steele, studentbody president, said in an interview Thursday, that another reason for students being asked to pick up their tickets at least a day in advance was to re-evaluate student seating. He said that discrepancies were shown in the number of student tickets sold and the number of people sitting in student seats. Thompson is an investigator for the Utah Attorney General and is assigned to the case. His number is 533-7626 in Salt Lake City. Even though "merit" is a standard way of operating in America, money as an incentive makes good sense largely to business-oriented people and managers. But philosophically, some doubts remain as to its type of motivation. "I'm not sure it brings out the best in people," McCormick noted. The executive council makes the decisions on student seating. Confusion Evident However, confusion is evident in the situation, with student government hoping that students pick up their tickets in advance, and with students still being able to pick up tickets the night of the game. Steele also said that at the first of the year, students were promised that their seating would all be padded, but that they have been given some unpadded seats. He said the whole system was currently being re-evaluated and that decisions would be made in the future. During the last half of the season 2309 student tickets were held. some people may be hesitant to make a long-distance call to his office, so arrangements may be made for collect calls. Callers need not use their real names if they don't desire, Thompson pointed out. Only collect calls from Ogden will be accepted. Assistant Legal Council for WSC Eric Bjorklund has stated, "It is unthinkable that the college system is not wholly a merit, rather, it's a demerit system in this case. The extenuating circumstances surrounding this is that this year as in a number of past years, our salary increases have never matched the con-s umer price index, " he said . Disseminates Pay As a group, the social science faculty passed a motion to dispose of merit pay until the cost of living allowance (COLA) is first recognized, he said. "Most of us agree with the concept of merit. But how can you have a merit system when you haven't even met the basic figure? At best, we'll get something less than 11 percent. The college is extremely interested in resolving this matter and certainly would not deprive any student of financial aid because that student offered information to the Attorney General's Office. "The Attorney General's Office can not solve this matter unless people are willing to other Have-nots further exacerbating the problem rather than alleviating it," he added. "They're able to do this because most professor's jobs are contingent upon a buyer's rather than a seller's market. There's not much mobility, and our only hope is unification," he remarked. System Divides Faculty "This kind of a system divides faculty, making them suspicious and envious of each other. It builds enmity and breeds rancor, precluding any chance of faculty unification which is sorely needed," McCormick continued. "If I were a manager and wanted to keep . morale and production low, I can't think of a better way to do it," he said. 0 ( I -"" I m V""' cooperate with them. |Description||Weber's current student newspaper, the Signpost, first appeared on September 29, 1937. For two years prior to that time, campus news was disseminated via announcements posted on a bulletin board known as the "Signpost". As a result, the masthead of the first issue of the paper itself featured a rudimentary wooden sign with the title spelled out in rustic-looking letters. Over the years the paper has been published continuously, though the look, size and style has changed several times.|
