' . , -5: : - ,fit .--v .v- Signpost photoJeff Nickerson Library Plays Role In by Scot Parry and Margaret Marberry Staff Reporters The WSC academic program is reviewed every five to ten years by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges (NACU). Weber State will undergo an accreditation review this April. During the past year each department on campus has prepared a self-study evaluation which has been submitted to the Academic Affairs department of WSC. The evaluations were consolidated into a catalog and sent to the NACU. In April a thirteen member committee will visit the school and form a report based on their own observations of Weber's performance and submit it to the NACU. The NACU then takes both evaluations and decides whether or not to give WSC accreditation. The purpose of these evaluations are to determine accredibility, but for the most part their purpose is to offer suggestions on how to improve the college. According to Dr. Marie Kotter, assistant vice president over academic support, these reviews are not required but in order to enter graduate school a student must first receive a degree from an accredited college. The last evaluation for WSC was in 1974. There was a great improvement over the 1968 evaluation WSC Accreditation so WSC was allowed to go ten years before another evaluation was needed. If a college looks like it's in a stable condition then an evaluation is taken every ten years. However, if there are any questions as to the stability of a college then an evaluation is taken every five years. The 1968 evaluation took place right after Weber became a four year college so there was some question as to its stability. Dr. Alan Linder, biology chairman of Idaho State during 1968, stated in his evaluation of the WSC botany, zoology and microbiology departments that the library facilities for these departments was one of the two most depressing aspects of WSC. The Stewart Library has improved since then, but it still has not passed the standards set up by the American Library Association. This is because there has not been sufficient funds from the legislature to update the periodicals and journals as well as to purchase new books. According to the American Library Assoc., there should be a certain amount of books per student and per faculty member. There should also be an adequate library staff. Between the years of 1975-1981 WSC alloted the library about 5.33 percent of its total budget, which was a little under the state average. During the 1981-82 school year, the library budget was $1,211,000. "With inflation, the cost of periodicals keep escalating, making things hard even with this see "Library" on page 6. Student Fee Hike Attention Students On Monday, March 12, at 3:30 p.m., the ASWSC Legislative Council will be meeting to discuss recommendations for a student fee increase. Students are invited to attend and give their input to ASWSC officers. If you care about how your tuition money is spent, you should plan to attend.

|Description||Weber's current student newspaper, the Signpost, first appeared on September 29, 1937. For two years prior to that time, campus news was disseminated via announcements posted on a bulletin board known as the "Signpost". As a result, the masthead of the first issue of the paper itself featured a rudimentary wooden sign with the title spelled out in rustic-looking letters. Over the years the paper has been published continuously, though the look, size and style has changed several times.|
