Vote Hofmann departs for Westminster College by Debra Malan "My major accomplishment at Weber State College was my involvement in the transition and building of its four year academic program from a two year school," maintains Dr. Helmut Hofmann who is leaving is administrative position and Weber State after six years of service. Dr. Hofmann, currently vice president of Research and Development, was academic vice president for five and a half years and played a key role in the establishment and growth of many campus programs. Among these programs is the establishment of the School of Health Occupations, the Honor and ROTC programs, the Police Science and four year Data Processing programs and the ' . .a college can be like a cancer to the community, growing and never giving, or it can be a help to that community." xNo' on constitution Research Learning and Instruction Technology Center. He was also involved with obtaining the first five year accreditation, support for the School of Education for a national award, substantial upgrading of the School of Business and its move to accreditation. Also the organization of the Skills Center, the creation of the Summer Festival of Fine Arts, the Bureau of Academic Research, instruction and long-range planning improvement. In his current position, Dr. Hofmann is in charge of establishing fund sources for the campus by contacting both private foundations, and federal agencies. "We have produced proposals of three million dollars in the two 4 month existence of the program which is an expansion of the Academic Research Bureau," he stated. Dr. Hofmann felt that his most successful program was the development of the Ethnic Studies Institute and awareness program which started three years ago when minority problems were affecting campuses nationwide. "Although the minority movement at Weber State was a small one it served to focus our attention on the real need for improvement and accommodation on our part." "The administration thought that this program was a good response and as a result more minority people are being hired as faculty and staff and even, nationally, more women are serving as administrators," Dr. Hofmann commented. Hofmann acknowledged the cooperation that he received from the faculty and administration at WSC and especially former Academic President William Miller, for their cooperation in the establishment of Ethnic Studies. The introduction of intent change was the most challenging aspect of Dr. Hofmann's career here, because, as he put it, the forces of status quo are strong j .in i i . ana aunougn ne respects traditional ideals, he is very committed to change. Previous to his coming to WSC, Dr. Hofmann was chairman of the Department of Psychology and Special Education at Utah State and he worked at the Rocky Mountain Education Laboratory in Salt Lake. He served at University of Michigan and Wayne State and was five years with the Ford Foundation. Now, at the end of the contract year, the first of July, he will leave to become Academic Vice President at Westminster College. According to Dr. Hofmann. this new position offers the challenge see editorial page 4 ". . .when you are an administrator you can't be liked by everyone, sometimes you have to make unpopular decisions." and expansion of the new ideas he has which cannot be easily financed in a state institution. He says, "A private institution has more funds readily available for new ideas than a state financed one. That's not to say one institution is any better or any worse than another." Dr. Hofmann intends to teach at least one class at Westminster College. "A difficult problem on a college campus is the flow of communication between administrators, faculty and the students. It's very important that we administrators keep in touch with the students," he contends."It's also important that a college be involved with community affairs. A college can be as a cancer that grows and grows and never gives anything to the community or it can be a help to its expansion." Finally. Dr. Hofmann expressed his enjoyment of working at Weber State, "it's a major college now." he said, "and a fine one. The student government has been very helpful as we have worked closely these past years." "When you are an administrator you'can't be liked by everyone and you often have to make unpopular decisions but you do your best and follow the principles that you believe."

|Description||Weber's current student newspaper, the Signpost, first appeared on September 29, 1937. For two years prior to that time, campus news was disseminated via announcements posted on a bulletin board known as the "Signpost". As a result, the masthead of the first issue of the paper itself featured a rudimentary wooden sign with the title spelled out in rustic-looking letters. Over the years the paper has been published continuously, though the look, size and style has changed several times.|
