Daniel L. Martino was born on February 3, 1915, in St. Paul, Minnesota. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in music at the University of Minnesota. He also earned his Master of Arts degree in music at the University of Minnesota in 1945. For four years he studied with Dimitri Mitropoulos, famous conductor for the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and the Metropolitan Opera Co.

From 1941-1960, Martino taught at several institutions, including the universities of Minnesota, Ohio, Indiana, Drake, and BYU while also continuing his education. From 1960-1973 he and his wife Ruth lived in the Ogden, Utah, area. He worked as Supervisor of Music Education in Ogden City Schools from 1960-1965. He started at Weber State in 1965 as the Chairman of the Department of Music and in 1967 became the Director of the Cultural Program and Director of the Fine Arts Center at Weber State College. From 1973 until his retirement in 1995, Martino was the Director of the Office of Cultural Affairs and Associate Professor of Music at Weber State College/University. During this time he wrote numerous articles for the Ogden Standard Examiner.

He was also deeply involved with organizations such as Rotary International, Who’s Who in American Music Education, Utah Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the America Association of University Professors, among several others. He was President of the Utah Music Educators Association and the Ogden Symphony Guild, Chairman for the Music Educators National Conference and Division of Arts (in the Utah Academy of Fine Arts), and served as a Board Member in several other organizations. He won various awards during his career, and was a guest conductor and lecturer in 33 states.

Martino was well known in the area of Ogden for his tireless efforts to further the influence of music. Due in large part to his efforts, the reputation for music at Weber State improved dramatically. His work made it possible to attract world-class performers to Ogden, enhancing the regard for music throughout the community. Following his retirement he volunteered as an on call Music Instructor and Consultant to local schools in Ogden. Martino passed away on December 28, 2001.
