PROPRIETORS OF Oregon Lumber Co. and North Powder Mill’g Co. also Dealers in General Merchandise. All Bills of Lumber Cut to Order on Short Notice. HALL, ECCLES & CO., Lumbermen. MANUFACTURERS OF ALL KINDS OF DRESSED LUMBER AND MOULDING. North Powder, Oregon, Apr 3rd 1887 David Eccles Esq Ogden, Utah Dear Sir, I find everything here going about right. The roads are good from town to top of hill, but from there to the mill they will be impassable for lumber hauling for two weeks yet possibly more, but I have been figuring up the cost and I think we can keep the mill agoing at a small profit by getting in logs on travoys, and taking them from the high spots in the timber, and by keeping agoing – the stores are kept busy. So altogether I think it better not to stop the mill, but pile up the lumber and wait until the roads are fit to haul on. It will perhaps cost 35040 cts to pile the lumber and the logs will cost 50 cts extra – but to stop for two or three weeks might disorganize our forces and others would be in debt to the store and all would require to be paid off – however after a few days I may decide to shut down. We are hard up for money with all this lumber at the mill and I hardly know how we will get along, and our credit gets impaired by neglecting payments. A few more thousand dollars to work with would make a difference in our profits quite appreciable. We have about 3 car loads flour on hand but most of the wheat has gone out of the country and but little more can be bought until harvest. So I think we had better keep what flour we have and sell it at retail prices for fear we may have to buy some later on and prices are continually going up, and our stores can sell all we have on hand. We must arrange for our ditch and pond right away, as driving may commence 30 days – but I want you to look the ground over before anything is done and I am waiting to know when you will be here – Your planer man is here. Mr. Williams family came yesterday. Yours, Theo F Hall
