PROPRIETORS OF Oregon Lumber Co. and North Powder Mill’g Co. also Dealers in General Merchandise. All Bills of Lumber Cut to Order on Short Notice. HALL, ECCLES & CO., Lumbermen. MANUFACTURERS OF ALL KINDS OF DRESSED LUMBER AND MOULDING. North Powder, Oregon, Apr 13th 1887 Mr Eccles Dear Sir: Yours of the 11th rcv’d. The N.P. folks will give us a better rate than Truckee. But they dare not do so until after the C.P. has fixed the California & Truckee rates and nothing is said about N. Powder. But you must not mention this. We can get a less rate than Truckee and the difference will be greater in our favor than before. But the C.P. must fix the rates before N. powder is mentioned. When the Truckee rate is fixed all the N. P. has got to do is to give us the same rate from Huntington that it gets from Portland Lumber which they will do. We have a rate for this year on the ORON of 8 ct. to Huntington, and the rate from Truckee will be the same as from Cal and Portland. We will try the water wheel today Mr. Hall has been getting things in shape and has done it well – But when you get here I think you will again wish us that it is hardly advisable to spend much money on this mill. If you were here I think we might decide to put the saw mill on the river opposite the present pond and make a pond there instead of the reservoirs we had surveyed. But I don’t like to decide such questions without you or Ramsey being here. But I have been figuring on it considerably and believe after all it will be cheaper and perhaps better than the former place. We would have to have one lumber yard in that event on the other side of the railroad but it is a better side for a yard. I am out everyday now trying to get deed of right of way from farmers on north powder. before we spend any money here, I am doing this as one or two are kicking and may give us trouble in the future. Don’t think you ought to take out your 8300 just now when we are so hard up – We are delivering no lumber for PROPRIETORS OF Oregon Lumber Co. and North Powder Mill’g Co. also Dealers in General Merchandise. North Powder, Oregon, 1887 now and have no means of getting money. And I can only keep the mill agoing by putting off all the debts possible and if we don’t get to hauling soon will have to stop anyway. Although we can keep the mill running if we can manage to pay up necessary accounts until we can deliver lumber. It is time of year where a number of matters should be determined and I wish you were here now. The saw mill goes first rate. The only difficulty is dry wood to keep steam. When we can keep up steam we can saw about 35000 feet of 1"" boards a day. I am going to connect the exhaust of the second Engine into stack – to make more draft perhaps then we can get along without dry wood – roads are drying fast. If weather keeps good may commence hauling in one week – we have over million feet piled at mill – I may shut down in day or two as logging roads are rather to dry to haul on travoys and to wet for trucks. We are shipping no lumber until rates are fixed – sent you all we could before Apr 5th and all that was dry enough to ship. Yours Theo F Hall Have a new road made for hauling lumber.
