I have received no word at all direct, but now and the Barkers have had several letters. We arrived at LE Haure early Tuesday am, and left our good old S S United States most regretfully. We had had a lovely passage and things were luxurious as

Transportation to Pacific war via a train with there ride. entrance compartments very different from our Pullmans. but quite adequate and comfortable. We came to this hotel, which is a truly beautiful building, with commodious Public rooms and quite an air of quietude and comfort, But the bed rooms seem funny after the S S United States. There is a huge wardrobe such as mother used to have to put our clothes in (no closets) I told Nan to alert the life guard when I was getting the bath tub- it is so vast.

But we have good beds, the sun shines brightly thru our French doors which lead out on to a balcony overlooking the street (as above). We have both been feeling fine, but get tired by night walking around the Barkern go on toure every day. but we have not yet started on real sight seeing. (Except yesterday when we went with Joe and Rosabelle to the top of the Effiel Townr. and had lunch on the 2nd level. very good). Nan and I have walked around the shops in this vicinity. This is quite a shopping center, with on specialty shop after another. Dresses, jewelry, men's wear (a lot of them) linens, lamps, hand bags galore, etc. We have bought nothing but our Elizabeth book, which we began to read on the boat. We crossed over to the famous Tuilleries Garden and found it to be a large children's play ground. mostly. I find it would have been rediculous for me to bring a walking stick. Both here and on the Boat I do remarkably well with Nan's vigilance and support.

We settled down to do some writing this an and shall take taxi to the larger stores. These stores are all specialty stores. around our hotel We do long to see something like Z C. M. I or Payless or Kress. We have found none such so far. Nan says to say "hello" to all of you. I often think of you Edith, remembering trips we have had together.
