My dear Doctor:-
I regretted very much to learn of the charges of one thousand
dollars for the Ellen Eccles ease, and while this affair has placed me in
a very embarrassing position, I still believe there is a misunderstanding
all around. As I told you in Rochester, this case is rather more than
personal to me, not only for the reason that I am Mrs. Eccles' regular
family physician, but particularly because I induced her to go to Rochester
with me for this operation, and also because I had told her of a previous
conversation with you, in which you stated that your professional charges
depended upon the person, and that people of moderate circumstances would
likely be required to pay from two to three hundred dollars, and upon that
information I so advised her of the probable charges; but now that your
bill is three or four times that amount, she seems to resent it, and I
fear rather suspicions me of connivance, because the matter was not net'led before I left Rochester.
