Dear Sirs:-
Sam has just taken the boat for Portland, and requests me to write you. They have broken, their Engine all to pieces and he has gone to Portland for the purpose, of buying a new one. The break is exactly the same kind as we had at Mill B. when I was there, only the engine bed is not broke up quite so bad. Sam does not like to take the respon¬sibility, of buying an engine entirely upon himself, and says if you don't want him to buy one to telegraph, him c/o ""Perkins Hotel"". He will buy an engine and ship it on the boat Wednesday morning if you don't wire him to the contrary. He dislikes to shut down for several reasons, he has made a cut on wages and we will pay all or very nearly so in store pay, so you see we are bound to make lumber cheaper than ever. If he buys, he will of course get them down as low as possible, and will get a Jan.1st dating and as much time as he can. Your teams of course
