The earliest photograph dates from 4 July 1876 and shows the intersection at 5th and Main. Today, that same intersection can be found at 25th and Washington. Two major photographic collections, shot over twenty years apart, make up the largest part of the collection. The first collection, photographed between 1920 and 1925, formed the basis for the Chamber's "Photo Logs." These photographs were loaned out all over the nation to businesses, people, and publications which wanted to write about or move to the Ogden area. At the time these pictures were taken, Northern Utah claimed the title as The Gateway to the West.

Accordingly, the Chamber divided this collection into sections that reflected Ogden's industial, economic and educational base. The industial photographs show the numerous canneries which were supported by Northen Utah's agricultural industry. Also included are many of the churches, businesses and govenment buildings along Washington Boulevard and surrounding streets. Ogden's early history would not be complete without photographs of the old Union Station with its railyard and the Hermitage, both of which brought notoriety to Ogden in the early 20th century.

The second major photograph collection, photographed from 1946 to 1948, shows the changes that took place in Ogden during the past twenty years. By this time Ogden's place in railroading was declining, many of the canneries were closed, and the once powerfull Amalgamated Sugar Company closed its local sugar beet plant. With all the changes the catagories remained the same while a new one was created to reflect the new military industry that had entered Northern Utah.

One last photographic collection was taken between 1912 and 1987. This collection contains the portraits the presidents of the Ogden Chamber of Commerce. The rest of this collection contains numerous photographs taken from the late 1800s through the mid 1980s.

The photograph collections have been intergrated by the subjects that the Chamber of Commerce created. A brief description of each photograph is given in the inventory, along with the individual call numbers and the year it was taken. A selected name and subject index is also provided. To obtain a particular photograph, the patron with note the collection, box, folder, and photograph number. This collection was processed in two main sections, first in 1992 and second in 1998, so you will notice that the last couple of boxes can be intermixed with the others. When looking up photographs, you should keep that in mind and use the listing in the Scope and Content section of this register to help you locate other related photographs.

There are no restrictions on the use of the Chamber's photograph collection. Many photographs taken from 1946 to 1948 include negatives from which duplicated can be made. Laser print photocopiers also make good reproductions.
