Each diversion tunnel would be the width of four lanes and the height of a five-story building. To speed this effort, engineers contrived a jumbo drill built around the chassis of an International chain-drive truck by welding on a steel skeleton to support four platforms. Two platforms held miners and the other platforms carried racks of drill steel.
